The wildlife documentary “Mission Sea Otter – Saving California’s Kelp Forests” receives international recognition with a festival award win and a new competition nomination.

KIEL/ECKERNFÖRDE – The wildlife and nature documentary “Mission Sea Otter – Saving California’s Kelp Forests”.  a production of ORF’s Universum Nature strand, has been awarded the Sister Cities Award at the Cinemare – International Ocean Film Festival Kiel. The award is jointly presented by the partner cities of Kiel and San Francisco and highlights films that foster international exchange and raise awareness for marine conservation.

In addition to this recognition, the film has now also been nominated for the competition in the category Best Marine Film at the GREEN SCREEN International Wildlife Film Festival Eckernförde, one of Europe’s most renowned festivals for nature filmmaking. 

“Mission Sea Otter – Saving California’s Kelp Forests” explores the life of sea otters along California’s coastline and reveals why these charismatic marine mammals play a crucial role in the survival of kelp forests. These dense underwater ecosystems provide food and shelter for countless species and store vast amounts of carbon dioxide, making them an important factor in slowing climate change.

The documentary was written and directed by Claudia Schmitt and Hendrik Schmitt and produced as a co-production by ORF, ARTE, Ushuaia TV and Längengrad Film in association with ORF-Enterprise.
