January 27 marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau by Soviet troops on January 27, 1945. In November 2005, it was officially proclaimed International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust by the United Nations General Assembly.

The Holocaust profoundly affected countries in which Nazi crimes were perpetrated, but it also had universal implications and consequences in many other parts of the world.

The Holocaust Memorial Day encourages remembrance in a world scarred by genocide. Thus, on January 27, we remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution.

On this occasion, ORF-Enterprise presents a line-up of documentaries that bring resistance fighters into the limelight, offer an interesting focus on Austria's attitude towards the restitution of "aryanized" properties, portray the life stories of Jewish refugees, and offer multi-facetted insights into the Mauthausen concentration camp.

Holocaust and Resistance in Vilnius: a Rescuer in "Wehrmacht" Uniform

1 × 53 min.

The film reconstructs and retells the story of an unsung hero: Anton Schmid, a Viennese electronics retailer who saved hundreds of Jews from extermination in occupied Lithuania in 1941/42. Schmid paid for his commitment to humanity with his life.

Memories of a Girl Who Survived - Anne Frank's Stepsister

1 × 50 min.

Eva Geiringer and her family fled the Nazis to Amsterdam, where they lived in the same apartment block as the Frank family. After her father and brother were murdered in Ebensee, Eva and her mother returned to Amsterdam where Eva’s mother married Anne Frank's father and thus, Eva posthumously became Anne Frank’s stepsister.

Let's keep it

1 × 94 min.

"Let's keep it" is Burgl Czeitschner's very personal exploration of Austria's attitude towards the restitution of "aryanized" properties. Since 1946, Austrian laws were supposed to eradicate the injustices of the Nazi era and Czeitschner wanted to find out whether something had changed after more than seven decades.

Remembering Mauthausen

1 × 50 min.

At the end of April 1945, while Karl Renner’s provisional government was already in office in Vienna, the murders continued at the Mauthausen concentration camp, which was liberated by American troops only on May 5, 1945. How has the memory of this “death zone” been processed since the war, especially in the surrounding area of the concentration camp?

Mauthausen Memorial Redesign - Bringing the Past to the Present

1 × 52 min.

An international committee took up a five year challenge to try a redesign of the memorial at the Mauthausen concentration camp. Contemporary witnesses describe their experiences and tell the background stories of new exhibits, and thus set new impulses for the international dealing with the Nazi era.

Shattered – Journey Into a Silent Past

1 × 96 min.

Britta and Marianne Lion grew up in a Jewish family in Aachen (Germany) and were forced to flee to the United States together with their parents in 1937. Which traces would filmmaker Walter Wehmeyer find 80 years after their escape? The siblings are two of hundreds of thousands of German Jews who lost their home country and family members forever – a widely overlooked generation.
