It is with great regret that the world says goodbye to Edita Gruberová - considered to be the “Queen of Coloratura” - who passed away at the age of 74.
After finishing her studies at the Bratislava Conservatory, she made her debut at the Vienna State Opera in 1970 as the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s “Magic Flute”. The first time she performed that role was at the Bavarian State Opera in 1974. She achieved her international breakthrough in 1976 by playing the role of Zerbinetta in “Ariadne auf Naxos” by Richard Strauss.
Edita Gruberová, who was famous for turning the bel canto style into her own, unmistakable specialty, performed on the great opera stages of the world for more than 50 years.
